GROUP BOOKINGS AVAILABLE AT THIS SCREENING
We’re excited to be launching our new Screening Room Series this Summer. These intimate screenings will celebrate a diverse range of films that the Festival team have personally selected; from genre highlights to foreign cinema, to underrated classics to indie gems, we’ll be showing a mix of great cinema that deserves a wider audience.
Every screening, in the atmospheric setting of Averys’ historic cellars, includes an arrival drink and an introduction explaining the context and significance of the chosen film, and the rationale behind its selection for our programme.
Our third Screening Room selection is the gloriously wild collaboration between director Werner Herzog and actor Nicolas Cage, Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans. Surreal, dark and tragicomic, Bad Lieutenant subverts the ‘crooked cop’ trope, offering a wry and sometimes pointed commentary on American society, and includes a host of brilliant actors in supporting roles including Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Brad Dourif and Alvin ‘Xzibit’ Joiner. Nevertheless, it’s truly Cage’s movie, as he gives one of his finest performances in years as a drug-addicted detective going off the rails during a particularly disturbing investigation.
Please note that due to licensing restrictions at the venue, Screening Room events are for over-18s only.
About The Film
2009 | 18 | 122 mins
After rescuing a prisoner from a flooding cell during Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans police sergeant Terence McDonagh is promoted to lieutenant – but he also becomes addicted to painkillers, and then illegal drugs, after he injures his back during the rescue. Struggling with debt and addiction, Terence is assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a family in a drugs turf war; as his drug use worsens and his behaviour become increasingly erratic, Terence places himself and everyone he holds dear in mortal danger.
About The Location
Averys began in 1793 and over the years, the family has built its reputation as one of the UK’s most pioneering wine merchants. Their historic wine cellar can be found beneath their shop on Culver street, and is an atmospheric and intimate setting for our both our Screening Room Series and our Vintage Screenings.
Two Belly Deli Box
Indulge during your screening with a delicious deli box from Two Belly cheese and beer shop. Enjoy 3 different cheeses, along with an artisan chutney and crackers.
Photo shows indicative contents; cheese and chutney may vary.
Pre-Screening Tasting
Before your screening, we are now offering the opportunity for a pre-screening tasting session with Averys expert, and Vintage Screening co-host Frank Mason.
For an extra £6.50 per person, enjoy an additional glass of wine before your film, with a brief introduction to wine tasting.
Frank has been working with Averys since 2010 and heads up the Events team, delivering over 120 events a year both virtually and in Averys historic vaulted cellar in the centre of Bristol. Frank completed the WSET Diploma in wine – a two year course on wine drinking, back in 2014! And now teaches those wine courses to both customers and staff. In his spare time he loves listening to death metal and is a professional crocodile wrestler (his words!).
