An exuberant sea adventure told with uncommon intelligence [...] ‘Master and Commander’ is grand and glorious, and touching in its attention to its characters. It achieves the epic without losing sight of the human, and to see it is to be reminded of the way great action movies can rouse and exhilarate us, can affirm life instead of simply dramatizing its destruction

We’re back at the stunning Mount Without this March! Formerly a church dating from the 15th Century, this recently restored creative space on St. Michael’s Hill boasts a rich history. Enjoy a drink in the Crypt, before watching films in the Grade-II listed nave beneath a stunning stained-glass window.

Our second March 2023 date at the Mount Without focuses on swashbuckling adventure, continuing with the highly acclaimed Master And Commander. Russell Crowe is perfectly cast as Captain Aubrey in this thoughtful and thrilling tale based on Patrick O’Brian’s novels, which faithfully chronicles life on the high seas during the Napoleonic Wars - it’s an exhilarating epic!

About The Film

2003 | 12A | 138 mins

During the Napoleonic Wars, Royal Navy captain Jack Aubrey receives orders to intercept the French frigate Acheron. However, after his ship HMS Surprise is damaged in their initial encounter, Aubrey must use all of his wits - and the combined talent of his crew - to defeat the odds and overcome the superior vessel.

Contains moderate violence and one use of strong language

About The Location

There has been a church on this site for over 900 years, with the original structure dating back to the Norman era; the unusual name comes from an era when it was outside the city’s walls. After major renovation works in the late 18th Century, and again after damage from the Bristol Blitz, the church finally closed its doors and was deconsecrated in 1999. The building was the victim of an arson attack in 2016, but after years of restoration work it has now reopened as one of Bristol’s most unique and characterful new event spaces.
