Screening Room 2024

Our Screening Room Series is back for 2024! These intimate screenings will celebrate a diverse range of films that the Festival team have personally selected; from genre highlights to foreign cinema, to underrated classics to indie gems, we’ll be showing a mix of great cinema that deserves a wider audience.

Every screening includes an arrival soft drink and an introduction explaining the context and significance of the chosen film, and the rationale behind its selection for our programme.

We are starting this year’s series with two British classics - in March, as part of our weekend celebrating the 75th anniversary of several Ealing Comedies, we’re excited to be presenting a lesser-known classic from 1949. A Run For Your Money follows two rugby-mad Welsh miners on their first trip to London - it’s an underrated Ealing gem, and rugby fans will be pleased to note that it finishes just in time for the England’s Six Nation match against Ireland…!

April’s Screening Room selection is Mark Herman’s poignant comedy-drama Brassed Off. Pete Postlethwaite leads an ensemble cast in this story of Grimley Colliery Band and their dual struggle to reach the National Brass Band Finals against the backdrop of the increasing uncertainty about the future of the local mine. 40 years on from the miners’ strikes, and over three decades since Grimethorpe Colliery (the film’s inspiration) closed for good, this underrated gem of modern British cinema has lost none of its pathos and charm.
