Silent Cinema at St Mary Redcliffe

On Wednesday 25th October, we visited St Mary Redcliffe for a special screening of The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari.

The quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema, the film is a nightmarish, visually striking descent into madness at the hands of a twisted hypnotist and his sleepwalking protégé. It’s widely regarded as one of the most influential films ever made, with a huge impact on the development of horror, film noir and arthouse cinema.

It was screened alongside a live score, composed and performed by Bristol-based quartet Minima.

Minima are a Bristol-based four-piece group, with instrumentation including cello, double bass, baritone guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, autoharp, dulcimer, synthesizer, glockenspiel and drum kit.

Formed in 2006, Minima perform in cinemas and art centres, as well as music and film festivals, playing original live soundtracks to silent films; their music is a 21st-Century interpretation of the images of silent film.

Highlights over the years have included performances at Glastonbury Festival, the Barbican Centre, BFI Southbank and the Transylvania International Film Festival. After their incredible performance at this venue last year accompanying our centenary screening of Nosferatu, we were delighted to be host them again for another night of atmospheric cinema.

With a sold out screening in this beautifully gothic setting, the event was a perfect way to begin Halloween celebrations.
