COMMANDO at Averys Wine Cellars

  • Averys Wine Merchants 9 Culver Street Bristol, England, BS1 5LD United Kingdom (map)
Your average cult movie is black-and-white, involves dwarves and/or talking rabbits, and isn’t much fun to watch on a Saturday night. The exception to this rule: ‘Commando’. The silliest, most relentlessly entertaining action epic in history [...] It’s the most pleasurable of guilty pleasures, and today still commands a legion of devoted fans. Once you’ve gone ‘Commando’, there’s no going back
— Nick de Semlyen (Empire)

DOORS: 18:45 | FILM STARTS 19:00

Vintage Screenings pair classic films with thematically linked wine tastings to create unique evenings in the stunning setting of Averys Wine Merchants’ historic wine cellar. Following a sparkling wine reception, the film will be accompanied by a tasting of four carefully selected wines courtesy of Averys’ resident experts, guiding you through them at stages during the film.

There are action films. There are B-movies. And then there’s Commando. This deliriously entertaining misadventure movie is full of spectacle while placing its tongue firmly in its cheek; Arnie delivers one-liners that’d make Roger Moore’s 007 groan with a straight face and more explosions than a NYE firework display.

To temper the onscreen carnage, we’re pairing this 40-year-old firecracker of a film with South American wines, in honour of the fictional nation of Val Verde that features heavily (fun fact: it also appears in Die Hard 2 and Predator, thanks to a shared script writer!).

Take your evening further with our add-on options:

• Enjoy a pre-screening wine tasting session as you learn more about wine tasting over a glass

• Indulge with a delicious L'Affinage Du Fromage deli box, with cheeses, chutney and crackers to enjoy alongside your film and wine

Please note that Vintage Screenings are strictly for over-18s only

But when a shadowy gang of mercenaries start killing off his former unit, it isn’t long until deadly danger is at Matrix’s door - and not long until he becomes the danger for his hapless adversaries…
