CINEMA DOORS: 11:00 | EVENT BEGINS: 11:10

Join Bristol Film Festival at Clifton Summer Screenings!

Taking place in the beautiful Mall Gardens in the heart of Clifton Village, this is outdoor cinema with a twist. With covered seating, a state-of-the-art LED screen and wireless headphones, enjoy your film come rain or shine - this is an outdoor experience that’s not to be missed.

Our very first event of 2024’s Clifton Summer Screenings is a special collaboration with Professor Charlotte Crofts of Cary Comes Home, Bristol’s festival dedicated to one of the city’s most famous sons, Cary Grant.

Celebrate 120 years of Cary Grant with a unique Bristol twist! Uncover the surprising story of Archibald Leach, the Bristol boy who became a Hollywood icon. Explore his enduring love for his hometown, the films that made him a legend, and the various ways in which the city celebrates his life and work, from the Cary Grant statue to the "Cary Comes Home" Festival and the new Raising Cary Grant theatre walk – a local passion project keeping his legacy alive. It’s a tale of transformation, from a childhood spent by the docks to Hollywood stardom, Cary Grant's journey is as inspiring as his films.  Join us for a glimpse into the man behind the legend!

About The Speaker

Professor Charlotte Crofts is a Professor of Cinema Arts at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and founder and director of the Cary Comes Home Festival (established in 2014). She is passionate about both cinema-going and Bristol as a city of film and has made various projects celebrating local cinema culture, including The Curzon Memories App and The Lost Cinemas of Castle Park App. She is on the Board of Trustees of the Curzon Community Cinema, Clevedon. She got the idea for the Cary Grant Festival when researching Bristol cinemas and discovered that Cary Grant talked fondly of visiting The Clare Street Picture House with his mother – where he learnt to use a pastry fork and saw early sound pictures – and the Metropole, with his father – a fleapit which smelt of raincoats and galoshes, but was by far his favourite of the two.

About Cary Comes Home

Cary Comes Home Festival is a labour of love for festival organisers Charlotte Crofts and Fern Dunn, born out of their shared passion for Bristol’s vibrant cinema culture and film heritage. The festival’s aims are to celebrate Cary Grant’s Bristol roots, develop new audiences for his films and recreate the golden age of cinema-going.
